All Jailbreak and Unlock Guides for iPhone, iPod and iPad

The last few weeks we got three jailbreak tools for iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPod touch 4G, 3G, 2G and iOS 3.2.2 on iPad (i.e. Limera1n, GreenPois0n and PwnageTool), in addition to the presence of other jailbreak tools for all several iOSs, all this has led a confusion among iDevices users, so I decided to collect all iOSs, jailbreak guides and unlock guides for all existing iDevices in one article. Check them after the jump.

GeoHot has Another Untethered Exploit for Future Jailbreak of 5th Generation Devices

You may be wondering why did GeoHot used comex's exploit to make his popular tool Limera1n untethered. Well, comex, has answered this question! The real answer is that GeoHot used comex's exploit not because he don't have untethered exploit but because he don't want to waste another bootrom exploit. That indicates that this exploit will be used to make SHAtter untethered exploit.
comex: @esemede he would have implemented his own untether, but that would be wasting an exploit

MuscleNerd: (translating that retweet of @comex: geohot has an iboot-level untethered exploit but held it back to conserve exploits)
So with Geohot's bootrom exploit, SHAtter exploit and comex's hacks, we can see that future jailbreak for iPhone 5 and iPad 2 will be easy and safe. Also, stay tuned for new PwangeTool version to hit the shelves soon.

HOW TO: Jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod touch 4G / 3G on Mac

We already broke the news and told you that Geohot with the help of some hackers could write Limera1n's code to work on Mac OS X. In case you don't know how to use the most easiest tool to jailbreak your iOS device, here's full step by step how to guide to jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G, iPod touch 3G and iOS 3.2.2 on iPad.

NOTE: If you are using Ultrasn0w to unlock your carrier, then don't use the instructions below as the unlock for new basebands is not available yet. For iPhone 4 users, use the instructions posted here to preserve your baseband. For other devices, wait for PwnageTool to be released this weekend.

STEP 1: Download Limera1n for Mac OS X from here.

STEP 2: Connect your iPhone to your PC via USB then launch Limera1n and hit “make it ra1n”
STEP 3: You will have to get your device into DFU mode by following the steps on the screen shown by Limera1n.
  • You iPhone will now be placed in recovery mode.
  • Press both the power and the home buttons.
  • When Limera1n asks you to, release the power button.
  • Your phone will now be in DFU mode
STEP 4: You should see a message like this indicates that your devices has been jailbroken successfully.
STEP 6: Now start Limera1n app from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and install Cydia as shown in the screenshots below.

STEP 7: Now simply restart your device and enjoy the jailbreak!

Limera1n and GreenPois0n: Let's Clean Out What's Going on!

I received a lot of comments and questions about the new jailbreak tools for iOS 4.1 so I decided to write this post to clear out what's going on in the jailbreak community, what tool should you use, and which is better?. Let's make it clear, GreenPois0n was scheduled to be launched last Sunday but Geohot came up with his Limera1n last Saturday to mess up the jailbreak community.
For people wondering about the difference between iBoot and bootrom exploits, Geohot found this vulnerability a while ago when both iBoot and bootrom contained the code that made them vulnerable. Apple noticed that iBoot contained a bad code so they fixed it in iBoot not in bootrom. Geohot noticed that Apple will fix bootrom exploit in the next generation devices by full hardware revision so he made the right decision by releasing Limera1n tool before Chornic Dev Team. Just to save SHAtter exploit for 5th-generation devices as iPhone 5 or iPad 2.

You may say, "Why didn't Geohot save his exploit for 5th-generation devices?". Well, Geohot's exploit works on all devices not as SHAtter which works on A4 devices only, so it was better to release Limera1n and save SHAtter.

Now, GreenPois0n & Limera1n tools are both based on the same exploit, so there's not any difference in both the tools, don't ask me which is better? I prefer using Limera1n but in case you faced some errors so go ahead and try GreenPois0n.

For people asking about Mac OS X version of both tools, there will be a Mac version of GreenPois0n but not in Limera1n as Geohot's site claims it will be available in 7 years (blah!). Also, iPhone Dev Team is working on PwnageTool for Mac OS X coming out this Sunday (as usual) and will support Apple TV.

Unlock? No, there's no unlock yet for baseband 05.14 and 02.10 and will not be before iOS 4.2 final release which is scheduled early in November. Hackers as Sherif Hashim has mostly finished the hard steps and MuscleNerd confirmed that ultrasn0w update will be available after iOS 4.2 release. So, for all iPhone 3GS, 3G unlockers, stay away from upgrading to iOS 4.2 (iPhone 4, use this guide) or you will not be able to unlock except after at least one month.

LimeSn0w to Unlock iOS 4.1 On its Way By Geohot?

It may be real! Geohot may surprise us (again!) with a new unlock solution for iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G using Limesn0w. The video below shows iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.1 on baseband 05.15.01 unlocked using Limesn0w solution via Limera1n jailbreak which was released two days ago. It would be a real surprise.
Of course there's a lot of users have updated to iOS 4.1 and now their devices on baseband 05.15.01 or 02.10.04 which is not unlockable at the moment. So Geohot may really surprise us Limesn0w.
The domain http://limesn0w.com is registered by Geohot, the same info as http://limera1n.com but the site indicates that "This will never be real.", you know, surprises! Geohot didn't say any word about that, we'll keep you updated at any update happens.

[Thanks John & everyone else for the tip]

Save SHSH Blobs of iOS 4.1 Now, Apple About to Patch Limera1n Untethered Hack [Warning]

Hurry up, backup your SHSH blobs of iOS 4.1 for your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, as Apple has just announced that it already has the fix of the daylight savings bug in its alarm clock application for iPhones that causes recurring alarms to go off an hour early, the fix will be available in the upcoming software update.
Apple: We're aware of this issue and already developed a fix which will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.
It makes sense that Apple will fix Comex's untethered hack. What that mean limera1n will be tethered jailbreak.  Remember JailbreakMe, it has been released 1st August, after 10 days Apple released iOS 4.0.2 and 3.2.2 to fix the JailbreakMe PDF exploit, it was exactly on 11th August. So if we apply the same scenario, we will expect that Apple will roll out its new firmware may be iOS 4.1.1 and 3.2.3 on next Thursday 19th October.

So we highly recommend to save your SHSH blobs of iOS 4.1 for your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, as soon as possible, you can follow our guide posted here. Feel free to discuss any problems in our comments section. [via ZDnet]

UPDATE 1: Dev-team  has just sent new blog post update to remind you to save SHSH hashed for iOS 4.1 before the official release of iOS 4.1.1 from Apple to keep your limera1n jailbreak untethered.
Because the “untethered” part of this jailbreak comes from a userland hack from @comex, you should still backup your SHSH hashes for 4.1. Do this by either letting Cydia keep them (“make my life easier”), or using Tiny Umbrella. This way you can always come back to an untethered, jailbreakable 4.1 on your devices after Apple has closed their 4.1 signing window (they’ll close the 4.1 window once they push out their next firmware version). If you fail to do this and ever need to restore to 4.1 again, you can still jailbreak but it will be a tethered JB (you’ll need to connect to your computer to finish the booting process, each and every time).

And remember: you can backup your 4.1 SHSH hashes without even being at 4.1 or even being jailbroken, by using Tiny Umbrella.

Limera1n Can “Technically” Jailbreak the Apple TV

If you are one of our reader, then you should knew that SHAtter exploit can jailbreak Apple TV and it was demoed in a video but with the launch of Limera1n yesterday, SHAtter exploit has been saved for 5th-generation device so users of Apple TV was complaining about that as they need a jailbreak for their new Apple TV.
We noticed that Geohot has updated Limera1n site adding a new sentence indicating that Limera1n can jailbreak Apple TV too:
AppleTV is technically supported, but theres no apps yet
The jailbreak can be done by putting your Apple TV into DFU mode by following the steps posted here and using Limera1n jailbreak guide but what's the point? You can't install app without having OpenSHSH service on your device so some hackers should work on installing OpenSHSH and running apps on it, we'll let you know when the jailbreak is updated to install OpenSSH.

Unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 4.1 with Ultrasn0w [How to Guide]

Have you jailbroken your iPhone 4 yet? Of course, yes! Geohot has released his Limera1n tool yesterday and it works with iPhone 4 very well (at least for me). If you have iPhone 4, you can upgrade to iOS 4.1 without updating the baseband then unlock it using Ultrasn0w. In case you already upgraded to iOS 4.1 while preserving your baseband, you will not be able to use this guide, just wait for a new Ultrasn0w update.

GreenPois0n Delayed, SHAtter is Safe Now

I just came from my school to continue posting about yesterday's big surprise. Yes, Geohot made it and his tool "Limera1n" now works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, and the iPad, it was a real surprise especially that Greenpois0n was scheduled to be released today.
Greenpois0n is now delayed because Chornic Dev Team & iPhone Dev Team have got a mind and can think (not as Geohot). They will try to do implementation of the limera1n exploit in greenpois0n and other tools as PwnageTool to preserve your baseband for Ultrasn0w unlockers.

Chronic Dev Team member p0sixninja posted on his Twitter account:
we have 3 options, A) Not release greenpois0n, B) Burn a second bootrom expoit, or C) Break our ETA and implement geo's exploit

we'll probably go with option C, but i'm too pissed off to work on this tonight. i'm going to go get wasted
iPhone Dev Team posted a new blog post this morning confirming that:
The release of limera1n has (hopefully!) averted the burning of 2 bootrom holes at once (both his and SHAtter). Releasing SHAtter now would be a complete waste of a perfectly good bootrom hole in light of limera1n, and so it can be held until Apple closes limera1n’s hole. While there’s no guarantee that Apple won’t also close SHAtter by then, it provides a ray of hope for devices after Apple’s bootrom respin. Meanwhile, look for an alternate implementation of the limera1n exploit in greenpois0n (and possibly other tools), where it should undergo more testing too.
Yes, they will not use SHAtter in GreenPois0n nor in other tools. I'm really happy that SHAtter is safe now and won't be used until Apple patch Limera1n's loophole. After that, another tool will be released based on SHAtter to jailbreak 4th generation & may be 5th generations devices. Apple WILL NOT catch this one.

Of course Limera1n is still in betas so it's recommended not to use the betas and wait for stable Limera1n release or GreenPois0n. Limera1n has now 4 betas in one night and he is still working on fixing out these issues. We will keep you informed.

UPDATE 1: Chornic Dev Team posts a new blog post confirming that they are not releasing the tool. As I told you, they are still working on implementation of limera1n's exploit to greenpois0n, here's the full post:
Thanks to the irresponsible antics of geohot, we will have to delay the release of greenpois0n (new ETA = as soon as possible), so that we have time to clean up his little mess and integrate the exploit he uses in limera1n into greenpois0n. This way, we can save SHAtter for future devices that may still be vulnerable to it.

We know that this is not what some people want to hear, but due to geohot needing to feed his ego (as usual) and revealing his limera1n exploit, we do not have any other responsible options.

Limera1n Jailbreak to Mess Up GreenPois0n Release?

Damn! Jailbreak drama is happening now. Limera1n iOS 4.1 jailbreak was released few minutes ago to jailbreak all devices for iOS 4.1 (we are posting guides, hold on) but we forgot about GreenPois0n jailbreak tomorrow. That's what I think, 'Limera1n totally screwed Greenpois0n' and why was that? just because a guy wanted to mess up the jailbreak community, he really wanted some attention.
The good thing that Chornic Dev Team & iPhone Dev Team thought very well about GreenPois0n release tomorrow. They decided to hold back SHAtter and not using it in GreenPois0n jailbreak, actually, they will try to patch Geohot's exploit in GreenPois0n jailbreak and they will try to give it tomorrow (I think they can't).
Of course and as expected, Geohot's Limera1n jailbreak is not working well with old bootrom devices and some users are also reporting that it doesn't work on iPhone 3GS new bootrom. We will back with how-to guides, just don't use Limera1n now, wait for our coverage.

Geohot is Coming Back to Jailbreak Scence With Limera1n to Jailbreak All iOS 4.1 Devices Forever

Yes, that's true! Geohot will make a full return back with new bootrom exploit and tool to pwn all current iOS devices on iOS 4.1 for life. Geohot has been out for months since his last blog post but his return will surely please everyone specially the 3rd-generation iPhone and iPod touch users. The jailbreak will supposedly called LimeRa1n and would be released on 10/11/10, just a day after the GreenPois0n scheduled release date.
The news has been confirmed by members of iPhone dev team and Chronice Dev Team on Twitter. They have confirmed that George Hotz will back with his new tool Limera1n but they are not happy with it as they want him to save this new exploit for the future next-gen iPad 2 and iPhone 5 devices.
MuscleNerd: As dramatic as geohot's last-minute all-device JB is, still a shame that two bootrom holes will be burned at once.

p0sixninja: yes, the news about geohot is true, the day after we release ETA he decides he wants a piece of the #pie

p0sixninja: and yes it is a different bootrom exploit, he wants us to use it in GP, but there’s no way we’ll make our ETA if we do

chronicdevteam: Note greenpois0n will be released as planned. if someone decides to burn a different perfectly good exploit, that is entirely on them.

chronicdevteam: It is actually him.

chronicdevteam: because his different exploit can be saved for new iphone / ipad / ipod, AND 3G S, you’d just have to wait a little longer
The ETA of Limera1n is exactly one year after one year after blackra1n was released to jailbreak iOS 3.2.1. StealthBravo confirms that too:
The significance of 10/11/10 is that its the one year anniversary of blackra1n’s release. 10/11/10 is the targeted release of limera1n
So, what do you think guys? Should Geohot really saves this new bootrom exploit for iPad 2 and iPhone 5 or should he just go on and release his tool as there's another userland exploit on it's way?

UPDATE 1: Limera1n is untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.1 only, for newer firmware, comex's jailbreak would be untether it. This was announced by chpwn.

Geohot May Come Back with "Ra1n"?

Well, a week ago we told you that George Hotz (Known by Geohot) left the Jailbreak scene by saying Good Bye and He will not make any jailbreak again, But before he left, he told us to follow his friend Mike Cohenn, Today, Mike Cohenn posted on his twitter account that it's the time to Make "Ra1n"!!
It's a surprise for both of us, but we have two facts we may put in our mind, The first that Mike Cohenn himself will release a jailbreak named xxxxRa1n and he will take the same exploit Geohot got to jailbreak iPhone 4. The Other fact that Geohot is really back and is working on a Jailbreak!
So Stay Tuned and I will inform you by any News about this Human!

Also Comex is about to update his popular tool "Spirit", It's (un)tethered Jailbreak for all devices, iPhone 4 / 3GS New and Old Bootroms / 3G and iPod Touch 3G / 2G. More Details posted here.
